Himalayan Foreland basin was developed in front of the rising Himalaya on the flexure of the under-thrusting Indian Plate. The southward propagating Himalayan thrust wedges ensured the progressive development of Siwaliks and present day Ganga foreland basin. The marine Paleocene-Eocene Subathu Formation marks the base of Siwalik foreland initiation and the non-marine (Neogene) Dharamsala and Siwalik Group deposited in a fully developed foreland since Middle Miocene. Due to ongoing thrust wedge loading the Siwalik sediments are uplifted that gave way to the evolution of Ganga Basin. The dynamic evolutionary models of the foreland suggested formation of the narrow and deep Siwalik basin evolving into the wide and shallower Ganga basin. These continental scale plate tectonic developments are very well recorded in the sedimentary history of Siwalik sequences. Also this ~ 8 km thick sequence holds the signatures of the initiation and development of the foreland and ongoing orogenic vis-à-vis biological evolution. These deposits also bear distinction of continental deposits being explored for oil and natural gas in India. After Middle Pleistocene when upper Siwaliks were uplifted the modern Ganga basin setup took over as modern foreland. As foreland basin received the sediments derived from the rising Himalayas and southern craton, it preserves signatures of tectonic-climate interaction that took place during the evolution of Himalaya through the Siwalik time.
In the past two decades, several organizations have generated surface and subsurface data using geological and geophysical tools. Such work includes Quaternary tectonics, neotectonics, basin evolution, sub-surface architecture, sedimentological regimes, seismic reflections and refraction studies, shallow sub-surface model and the exploration of resources. Particular emphasis has been given for the exploration of Hydrocarbon potential and understanding the palaeoecology- palaeotectonic. A review of the state of art on the subsurface structure, tectonic, climate and exploration strategy is required to evaluate our understanding and to plan future strategy. The proposed workshop is planned to discuss the updated understanding and future strategy on the evolution and exploration models for Himalayan foreland basin. It is planned that the workshop will focus on the decisive gaps in our knowledge and new emerging areas of research related to tectonics and hydrocarbon potential.
Themes: Following aspects of Himalayan foreland basin are planned to be focusedForeland basin architecture and evolution Shallow subsurface studiesSedimentary proxies for climate-tectonic interface Exploration beyond seismic methodsResource Potential

The technical programme will consist of both ORAL and POSTER sessions. Authors should indicate the preference for presenting their paper either as an oral or poster presentation. Preference of author for a particular style of presentation shall be borne in mind at the time of final program composition. However, the decision of the technical program committee shall be final in this regard.
Submitted abstracts will be reviewed & accepted on the basis of merit and contents with respect to the theme of the seminar for ORAL or POSTER presentation. Acceptance will be communicated before 16th August 2009. Authors will have to submit full-length papers (in triplicate with original diagrams-Text in MS-Word and figures in jpeg format) by 28th October 2009, which will be reviewed for publication in the Journal of Indian Geophysical Union. Submission of manuscripts in electronic form is preferred. Authors are requested to submit the final text on CD-R/RW.
